During a visit to The Energy and Resources Institute's (TERI) campus in Gurgaon, Haryana, on Thursday, Aung San Suu Kyi, the Myanmarese pro-democracy activist, called for protection of natural resources from the adverse impacts of urbanisation.

The Nobel laureate has been vocal about the need for environmental conservation and adoption of sustainable models of development.

Suu Kyi, who is on her first visit to India in decades, met with TERI Director General R.K. Pachauri during her tour of the institute.

"Myanmar is rich in energy resources," she said. "Myanmar also needs an effective energy policy." The country faces challenges in finding sustainable solutions to fuel its economic growth.
