Online shopping in India is set for tighter consumer protection rules from January 1, 2027. Under the amended Consumer Protection (E-Commerce) Rules, platforms will have to clearly disclose sponsored listings, avoid misleading manipulation of search results and show the previous price alongside a discounted price. The previous price will be based on the lowest price offered during the preceding 30 days. Platforms will also have to conduct annual self-audits for dark patterns and display compliance certificates. Marketplaces will need to provide more information about products and sellers, including return and refund terms, warranties, delivery and payment details. Imported products will also require importer and country-of-origin disclosures.
