U.S. President Donald Trump fired a third salvo of trade tariffs, imposing ‘reciprocal tariffs’ on India and other countries around the world. The announcement was made just ahead of his meetings with Prime Minister Narendra Modi in Washington, DC. In his trademark dealmaker style, Trump built pressure on the Indian delegation, emphasising the tit-for-tat tariffs not once but thrice – twice in the presence of PM Modi. Meanwhile, India offered the U.S. several sops including a promise to double bilateral trade to $500 billion by 2030 and purchase oil, gas and defence equipment from the U.S. There are also reports that a bilateral trade deal could be in place by the end of this year.
