Develop Mumbai-Pune expressway as intelligent corridor, says Nikhil Meswani

The Mumbai-Pune expressway should be developed as an intelligent corridor, promoting investments from science and technology firms over the entire stretch, said Reliance Industries (RIL) Executive Director Nikhil Meswani at the Make in India seminar. "It should be developed as the Silicon Valley of India, promoting investments from firms which are doing robotics," he added.

The development of the expressway is one of the four suggestions that he made to Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis. The other suggestions are construction of Mumbai-Nagpur corridor and Pune-Nasik corridor and skilling of people. Meswani, the cousin of Mukesh Ambani, is also the HR head of RIL.

"The Mumbai-Nagpur corridor will ensure industries reach the interiors of Maharshtra and create job opportunities there. Sectors like textiles can grow fast in these areas, where cotton farming is spread," he said. He added that the textile industry is becoming smart, intelligent and technical, and the country needs to capture the opportunities.

The Pune-Nasik corridor will increase export from the state, said Meswani. While Nasik is the hub of manufacturing and agriculture, Pune is the centre of services for Maharashtra. Connecting Pune further to Mumbai through a technology and intelligent corridor will complete the full infrastructure cycle.

He asked the state to promote starting of universities and centres for education for skilling manpower, which is necessary to develop the country as the hub of manufacturing.
