The move by the power ministry for mandatory cabinet approval needed from various concerned ministries to float tenders for sourcing power equipment for state-run NTPC Ltd worth Rs 17,000 crore may not be an easy task, as the power producer was indicted in August by a US Court for reportedly having received bribes from California-based Control Component Inc (CCI) for its projects.

According to an official, the power ministry, which has initiated the mandatory cabinet approval plans to float a tender for sourcing these equipment among various ministries, would be thoroughly scrutinised, which may also delay the process. The ministries will offer their suggestions for NTPC's mega purchase, which may ask for a scrutiny of the process of sourcing the power equipment.

NTPC plans to source 11 boilers, turbine and generator sets for its power projects at Darllipalli and Gajamara in Orissa, Lara (Chhattisgarh) and Kudgi (Karnataka).

Earlier, in October 2009, NTPC had floated a tender to source 11 boilers, turbine and generator sets for five of its power projects.
