Indian rupee on Tuesday declined by 12 paise in early trade, tracking gains in the US dollar against major currencies.
At the Interbank Foreign Exchange (Forex) market, the domestic unit was trading 12 paise lower at Rs 44.56/ a dollar in early trade.
The rupee had closed 9 paise lower at Rs 44.44/45 against the greenback in the previous session.
Forex dealers said dollar's gain against other major currencies and weak opening on the stock markets weighed on the rupee.
Besides, month-end dollar demand from importers and oil refiners, too kept up pressure on the Indian currency.
