Ultrabooks are supposed to be thin. But not all these devices boast a similar waist size. Some are fat even by laptop standards, while others are ultra thin even by Ultrabook standards. At the latter end of the scale is the new Samsung Series 9 Notebook . Though the company is not calling it an Ultrabook, this is as thin as the Ultrabooks can get. The one thing that is fat about this device is its price, prompting Samsung to tout this as a notebook for power users.

DESIGN
Close your eye and hold the Series 9 and you will be forgiven for thinking you have a tablet in your hands. Well, it is that thin-the maximum thickness is 0.64 inches while it is just .5 inches (12.9mm) at the thinnest point. It weighs just 1.16 kg, a tad heavier (about 40 gm) than the lightest Ultrabook we have seen. The Series 9 uses Duralumin, which despite being lightweight is twice as strong as aluminum. The unibody design is so seamless that is hard to detect the joints. The metallic dark grey finish is offset by the chrome edges which add to the style factor. The chrome also frames the spacious trackpad. There are grills behind the hinges and under the body for the fan.

PERFORMANCE
With a third generation Intel Core i7 processor coupled with 4GB RAM any discussion about performance is quite pointless. The PCMark7 score came to 4059, which is impressive. The two-second resume works fine. Even more exhilarating was the boot-up with the Samsung Fast Boot on-it took all of 10 seconds. The only red flag we noticed was that the device heats up a bit when it is stressing itself, like during the benchmark tests. The battery life is also impressive and we could squeeze out seven hours despite a lot of hard work.

FEATURES
The 13.3-inch SuperBright Plus widescreen display is sharper and more vivid than most of the competitors. The sound quality is also good, with the focus being on clarity and not loudness. The backlit keyboard is almost fullsize and the keys are very comfortable. They lack a bit of travel, but then this notebook is not for people who will beat the hell out of the keys. Only the power key is extra, pushed towards the hinge. But to add to the usability, the Fn keys take care of most of your needs. Samsung has added a software launcher dock on the screen, though we would have loved a dedicated key to help bring it to life. But this customisable dock lets you access most common programmes without turning to the Start button.

OVERALL
This is one stylish notebook with a lot of eye-ball value. And it is not just about looks, this device can perform any task you want it to. And the portability is a real feature with this one as you won't even realise that you have a computer in the backpack. The only drawback with the device is the price tag of Rs 1,02,990, which is a bit steep by any standard. And, it runs Window 7 when Windows 8 is just round corner. But we think it is impressive enough for power users to dish out the moolah.

Why we fell for it: Amazing, super thin design, stunning performance
