ALCATEL ONE TOUCH ULTRA IDOL
Price: Rs 21,000
Specs: 4.7-inch; 8 MP camera; Android Jelly Bean; 1.2GHz dual core processor; 1GB RAM

The Alcatel One Touch Idol Ultra is a premium looking smartphone. The company claims it is the world's slimmest Android smartphone and we have to agree that the 6.5mm thickness makes it easy to hold despite the big display.

This is a neat looking phone with no branding on the front. If you are lucky people will start thinking you have purchased a Samsung smartphone. It has a non-removable rubberised back with a micro SIM slot on the side panel. In its effort to achieve the thin waistline, Alcatel has done away with the 3.5mm jack for connecting headphone. You now need a special connector that converts the charging port into the headphone jack. Thankfully, the sound output doesn't suffer from this adjustment.

Alcatel One Touch too has a customised user interface that looks good and is easy to use. The lock screen has got a rectangular box displaying time, date and day along with icons for camera, messaging and phone. The phone is unlocked when you slide a finger down the middle of the screen.

The Idol Ultra runs Android 4.1 and is powered by a dual-core processor clocked at 1GHz with 1GB RAM. With these resources, it manages to perform all basic tasks and even some document edits with ease. It scored 2813 on the Quadrant Standard Benchmark test.

This smartphone comes with 16GB onboard storage and doesn't have a memory card slot. So the users will have to be satisfied with 13.3 GB user accessible storage.

Having an 8MP camera doesn't mean that it will be as good as the one found on the Apple iPhone 5 or the Samsung Galaxy SIII. The Ultra Idol snaps images that look good on the phone's bright display as well as on larger screens. But there was visible noise in images captured in low light. The 1800 mAh battery onboard managed to give us a day on average use.

BAG IT OR JUNK IT? A stylish Android phone with a mediocre camera.
