At the BT India@100 Summit, Maharashtra FDA Commissioner Tukaram Mundhe revealed the story behind the raid on the Bombay High Court canteen. In conversation with India Today TV’s Preeti Choudhry, Mundhe explained that the action followed questions raised during a court hearing over whether the FDA was targeting only private establishments. Mundhe said his team had data showing action against government and semi-government establishments as well. When asked whether the FDA had inspected the High Court canteen, he said it had not. The team was subsequently asked to inspect it. Mundhe said the FDA team found that two of the canteens operating on the premises did not have the required licences. The episode highlights his approach to food safety enforcement and his insistence that regulatory action should apply across establishments.
