Migraines can be quite a pain, but you can arrest it with a few precautionary steps taken in advance. Here's how to prevent a debilitating headache from ruining a perfectly nice day.

LIGHTS, NOISE, NOPE

Anything from loud noises to flashing lights and sensory stimulation can trigger off migraine attacks, and you -- sadly enough -- cannot always avoid them. However, a few simple precautions like taking a break from the TV or computer screen to rest your eyes, or adjusting brightness levels on your monitor, can go a long way in curbing such incidents. Also, if possible, avoid noisy work environments.

WATCH WHAT YOU EAT

Edibles such as chocolate, red wine and dark-colored alcohol, processed meats, sweeteners and cheese can cause migraine-related headaches. Know which foods and additives bring about a headache and avoid them as far as you can.

THE NUTRITION PATH

While medicines are not known to be very effective at warding off migraines, having the right nutrients can help to a great extent. As magnesium deficiency has been known to contribute to migraines, taking a daily supplement may help reduce the number of such episodes. Herbal remedies and other non-prescription supplements can be quite beneficial too.

KEEP A HEADACHE DIARY

By keeping a diary, you can easily track your triggers and their causes. Write down everything you eat and drink, your exercise routine and schedule, the weather, emotions and medication, and you will be able to spot a pattern.

AVOID STRESS

Easier said than done, you might say. But then, remember that while life is all about difficult situations, it's how you handle it that matters. If it helps, try yoga, aromatherapy or meditation to calm yourself.
