Roman Abramovich, the maverick Russian billionaire, who has a personal fleet of five luxury yachts, was once cruising from Newcastle to Harwich when an amazing new Giga Yacht, anchored just off the coast, caught his eye. The story goes that within minutes, he anchored his boat, struck a deal with the manufacturers to custom-make an exact look-alike for him (of course, with a few changes, which made it three times more expensive) and the next morning, feeling happy about his new toy, he went ahead and made his second purchase—the Chelsea Football Club. While this story can’t be corroborated, what it does show is the fascination the rich and famous the world over have for yachts.

And India’s very own billionaires are no exception. From romantic getaways to holding board meeting while roaming the high seas—yachts have today become a status symbol for the high and mighty. The Experts: We caught up with Aashim Mongia of West Coast Marine (exclusive dealers for Majesty and Silvercarft yachts), Gautam Dutta of Marine Solutions (exclusive dealers for the Ferretti yachts) and Riyhad Kundanmal of Ocean Crest Marine (dealers in yachts such as Formula, Monterey, Fairline and the luxurious Alibi) to zero in on the best yachts money can buy in India

Mega Yachts:
200-300 feet At present, there are no mega yachts available to buyers in India, unless, of course, you choose to book it abroad and cruise the high seas when in Europe. Amevi owned by Lakshmi Mittal is a mega yacht—262-feet-long, with six decks—that can accommodate 16 guests overnight. Giga Yachts:
Longer than 300 ft Again, no giga yachts are available in the Indian market at present. The newly-built 82m Alpha Nero, which has, among other things, an infinity pool, or the 63-metre Lionheart (owned by Topshop boss Sir Philip Green) are giga yachts. Both these boats are huge but the 100 metre-long Prelorus owned by Roman Abramovich is, quite literally, in a different class.
