  1. Don't be swayed by big discounts : As a smart shopper, you need to take a step back when you see a too-good-tobelieve sale, especially online. Typically, discounts are given on slightly dated products and as a trend-savvy shopper, you want the best that money can buy. That's not to say that you can't score great deals during discount season, but you may not necessarily be scoring a steal. In my experience, it's smarter to opt for 30 per cent off on a product from the latest collection than a 50 per cent off from last season stuff.
  2. Check feedback: Learn to make use of all that feedback on buying from particular sites as not all have good after-sales service or exchange policies that work. Pore over user reviews, recommendations and suggestions before making a choice of where to buy from. With fashion blogs and websites offering comprehensive inputs, you won't go wrong with a big purchase.
  3. Keep details at hand: Online shopping portals score high on convenience as they allow you to buy things from the privacy of your home or office. Since you have the luxury of shopping anywhere, anytime, make the most of this by ensuring you have all relevant payment information at hand. Saves time and repeated keying of info.
  4. Make full use of stylists: Stylists bridge the gap between a real-time experience of trying out clothes and the heady thrill of binge browsing. Most online shopping portals now offer the service of consulting their in-house stylist before making a purchase. Talk to one if you're unsure about size or fit and even send your measurements across. Don't worry about nitpicking or taking time over a decision as you have ample time online before making that final payment. This cuts down on returns and benefits the website as well in the long run. Go ahead and splurge.
  5. Explore new and boutique brands: Most high-end international brands do have a niche presence in India, but there's no access to the few that don't. Online websites let you explore options not normally available in a retail experience. Whereas the discerning Indian shopper has an insight into brands such as Loius Vuitton, Versace and Prada, they may be missing out on new, edgy high street brands.
