Mobile number portability (MNP), which allows consumers to change their service providers and still retain their old mobile numbers, may become a reality by June 2009.
Gearing up for MNP
- Number portability to be introduced by June 2009
- TRAI wants an independent Clearing House Administrator to oversee the process
- Friction between TRAI and DoT might delay MNP introduction
This is the recommendation of the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI). To ensure a smooth transition to the new regime, TRAI has forwarded to the Department of Telecom (DoT) a proposal to appoint an independent MNP Clearing House Administrator (MCHA), which will oversee the process.
However, given the friction between the TRAI and the DoT, don’t expect any action on MNP soon.
