What is it? It is a nationwide toll-free number that can be used to contact the emergency medical response services.

What is it based on? The US 911 and British 999 emergency numbers.

When will it come into force? Gujarat, Andhra Pradesh and Uttarakhand are already using the system and a nationwide system should be in place by the end of 2008.

How will it work?

After the call is answered at a multi-language call centre, the system will use location-tracking to find the closest ambulance and dispatch it.

How much will it cost? The centre has already allocated Rs 732 crore for the National Emergency and Trauma Care Programme in late 2007.
