Sensex down on profit-booking

The Bombay Stock Exchange benchmark Sensex fell by almost 55 points in the opening trade on Tuesday, as investors and funds locked profits after Monday's gains amid a mixed trend in Asian region.

3.30 pm: After moving in a range and mostly on the negative side, the Sensex ended the session lower Tuesday at provisional 20,213.33, down 89.79 points or 0.44 per cent. The BSE 30-share index saw a high of 20,344.68 against a low of 20,189.30 during the day. Index losers included Bharti Airtel (-2.70 per cent), Tata Steel (-2.65 per cent), SBI (-2.08 per cent), ONGC (-1.94 per cent), Hindustan Unilever (-1.91 per cent), RComm (-1.76 per cent), BHEL (-1.52 per cent), Hindalco (-1.40 per cent) and HDFC (-1.38 per cent). Gainers comprised Maruti Suzuki (3.66 per cent), JP Associates (1.48 per cent), ITC (1.09 per cent), Reliance Infra (1 per cent), Cipla (0.91 per cent), DLF (0.70 per cent), among others.

3.14 pm: JSW Steel has posted consolidated net profit of Rs 373.26 crore for the quarter ended September 30, against Rs 322.75 crore for the quarter ended September 2009. Net sales for the quarter stood at Rs 5,908.08 crore, against Rs 4,729.67 crore last year. On NSE, the company's shares were lower by 1.26 per cent at Rs 1,223.60.

2.54 pm:
Kalpataru Power Transmission has secured two orders worth over Rs 384 crores from PMC Projects (India) Pvt Ltd and National Grid Corporation of the Philippines. On NSE, Kalpataru Power shares were down 1.74 per cent at Rs 175.40.

2.20 pm: Sterlite Industries (India) has reported consolidated net profit of Rs 1,008.03 crore for the quarter ended September 30, higher from Rs 958.85 crore for the quarter ended September 2009. Net sales stood at Rs 6,028.98 crore, against Rs 6,085.46 crore for the same quarter of previous year. On NSE, the company's shares were down 1.19 per cent at Rs 170.50. The stock saw a high of Rs 173.70 versus a low of Rs 168.65.

2.10 pm:
Bosch Ltd has posted standalone net profit of Rs 236.07 crore for the quarter ended September 30, against Rs 209.73 crore for the quarter ended June 30. Net sales for the September quarter was Rs 1,707.01 crore, compared with Rs 1,656.08 crore for the quarter to June. On NSE, the company's shares were up 1.28 per cent at Rs 6,228.

1.47 pm: IBN18 Broadcast has reported consolidated loss of Rs 12.85 crore for the quarter ended September 30, against a loss of Rs 11.18 crore for the quarter ended June 30.. Net sales for the quarter ended September was Rs 188.66 crore, compared with Rs. 170.25 crore for the quarter to June. On NSE, the company's shares were higher by 3.66 per cent at Rs 120.30.

1.30 pm:
ARSS Infrastructure Projects has received new work order from various government departments as on October 26, aggregating to Rs 27.52 crores. On NSE, the company's shares were trading flat at Rs 1,173.30.

1.07 pm: UltraTech Cement has reported standalone net profit of Rs 115.77 crore for the quarter ended September 30, against Rs 250.90 crore for the quarter ended September 2009. Net sales stood at Rs 3,214.70 crore, compared with Rs 1,540.81 crore for the same quarter of last year. On NSE, the company's shares were subdued by 0.21 per cent at Rs 1,095.70.

12.50 pm:
Tata Global Beverages' overseas subsidiary based in UK has acquired minority stake in the equity capital of Activate, a performance beverage and bottled water company, based in US. The subsidiary has an option to increase its stake over the next 12 month period. On NSE, the company's shares were lower by 0.35 per cent at Rs 128.

12.35 pm:
Dena Bank has posted standalone net profit of Rs 160.63 crore for the quarter ended September 30, up from Rs 124.64 crore for the corresponding quarter of 2009. Interest expended was Rs 756.20 crore compared with Rs 722.33 crore for the same quarter of the previous year.

12.17 pm:
United Phosphorus has reported consolidated net profit of Rs 114.65 crore for the quarter ended September 30, against Rs 102.33 crore for the corresponding quarter of 2009. Net sales was at Rs 1,224.65 crore, against Rs 1,117.60 crore for the same quarter of previous year. On NSE, the company's shares were down 4.88 per cent at Rs 206.55.

11.16 am: Aegis Logistics has been awarded the operations and maintenance (O&M) contract for the product storage and dispatch operations of Bharat Oman Refinery at Bina in Madhya Pradesh. The contract is valid initially for 5 years and commences in December 2010. The facilities under management wilt be Petroleum and LPG tanks, as well as railway and tanker dispatch operations. On NSE, the company's shares were higher by 1.69 per cent at Rs 331.50.

10.15 am: Nirmal Bang has advised traders to buy Mahindra&Mahindra with a stop-loss of Rs 703 for short term. "Buy M&M with a stop-loss of Rs 703 from a short term trading perspective. Huge delivery based buying witnessed in the counter. The oscillators RSI and Stochastic are also giving a positive indication of a rally happening. Immediate target could be Rs 740 / 770," the report said. On NSE, the auto major's shares were up 1.65 per cent at Rs 726.50.

9.50 am:
"Today, the Indian markets are likely to open flat and move up later in the day. The underlying tone of the market would be rangebound. Among the sectoral indices, Metals, Realty and Healthcare could do well," said HDFC Securities in its morning note.

9.44 am: Among the losers are Hindalco (-1.49 per cent), Tata Consultancy Services (-1.22 per cent), Hindustan Unilever (-0.87 per cent), ICICI Bank (-0.85 per cent), Larsen & Toubro (-0.82 per cent), ACC (-0.73 per cent), Bharti Airtel (-0.70 per cent), State Bank of India (-0.59 per cent), HDFC Bank (-0.34 per cent), Infosys Technologies (-0.17 per cent) and Tata Motors (-0.14 per cent).

9.41 am: Maruti Suzuki (2.73 per cnet), Jindal Steel (1.22 per cent), NTPC (0.58 per cent), Wipro (0.58 per cent), Jaiprakash Associates (0.56 per cent), Hero Honda (0.55 per cent), ITC (0.53 per cent), Cipla (0.48 per cent), Tata Power (0.44 per cent), Reliance Infra (0.42 per cent), Tata Steel (0.37 per cent), Mahindra & Mahindra (0.34 per cent) were among the top gainers.

9.33 am: Sensex was up 18.43 points at 20,321.55. The BSE sensitive index opened at 20,325.44 versus the previous close of 20,303.12. The 30-share index moved between a high of 20,342.65 and low of 20,248.20 in the early minutes.

9.29 am: Nifty was at 6108.10, up just 2.3 points. The NSE benchmark opened the day at 6116.30 against Monday's close of 6105.80. The 50-share index saw a high of 6117.95 versus a low of 6090.60.
