The market ended lower on Wednesday, tracking subdued Asian markets on caution ahead of a near-certain Fed rate hike later in the day, while Coal India fell the most on the broader NSE index after disappointing quarterly results.
The NSE index ended down 0.48 per cent at 8,182.45 while Sensex closed down 0.36 per cent at 26,602.84.
Top losers on the BSE were Kaveri Seed Company (8.52%), Den Networks (5.24 per ent) and Coal India (4.42 percent).
The Kaveri Seed stock closed lower after the firm reported a 94.9 percent fall in its Q2 net profit (quarter on quarter).
Coal India stock fell after the state run miner reported a 77.4 per cent fall in Q2 profit. Its net profit fell to Rs 600.4 crore for the reporting period against Rs 2,654 crore for the corresponding quarter an year ago.
Top gainers on the BSE were HCC (4.61 percent), Welspun Corp (3.93 percent) and Prestige Estates (3.35 percent).
Market breadth was negative with 1733 stocks falling against 905 rising on the BSE.
The Federal Reserve is all set to end its two-day policy meeting on Wednesday afternoon with an interest rate hike. It will issue new forecasts assessing whether the economic outlook has changed since the US election.
