How many young investors invest in equities? How many buy real estate? Money Today, in collaboration with Evalueserve and Greenfield, polled over 400 young workers to understand their attitude to investing. The key findings:

1) They start very early:  Investing before entering college? This might have been unimaginable some years ago. But 6% of the youth have done so. And by the time they reach the voting age, this figure rises to 34%. Youth use pocket money, income from odd jobs and money lent by family and friends to invest chiefly in stocks.

  •  45% youth had already made their first investment by 24
  • ? Only 15% waited till 24 years before venturing into investing

    Methodology


    The survey was conducted on 407 working youngsters in January 2008. The respondents were below the age of 29 who earn a minimum salary of Rs 10,000. The questionnaire comprising 20 questions was sent to the respondents across the country by e-mail. Maximum number of respondents— 36%—earn between Rs 20,000 and Rs 40,000 a month. Over 60% have a work experience of 2-5 years. More than 80% youth work full time and 7% of them are self-employed.
