Abhishek R. Goyal, 29, has found a lucrative vent for his creativity in wood. His Mumbai-based outfit, Panchatatva, uses natural products to offer customised gift options for corporates and individuals.

What led you to start Panchatatva?

I used to assist my father in the family business, but always wanted to start my own venture. Then, in 2006, I and my wife, who is a commercial artist, hit upon the idea of making gifts from natural products as there was a niche market for it. We decided to specialise in wood because it is the perfect base for gifts.

What was your initial investment?

We put in about Rs 2.5 lakh, which was sourced from my savings. The money was spent on research, setting up the production unit and purchasing raw materials.

How many employees did you start with?

Initially, I hired only one trainee. In three years, our team has grown to 35 people. Did you face any problems? Our biggest challenge was to cut manufacturing costs and market the products with our limited budget. What is the price range of your gifts? It varies from Rs 200 to Rs 30,000. We have a production capacity of 1,500-2,000 handmade gifts a month.

Who are your main customers and which gifts are the most in demand?

We have both corporate and individual clients and customise gifts for all festivals and occasions. For instance, during Diwali, we get many orders for items like clocks, pen stands and cardholders. However, customised name plates are among our most popular options.

What are your future plans?

We are looking forward to acquiring ISO certification this year. Also in the pipeline is an upgrade of our Website, which will help the buyers place their orders online.
