COVID-19 vaccine: Bharat Biotech fast-tracks Covaxin's trials, halves Phase 2 test size

As part of its effort to fast-track COVID-19 vaccine development, Hyderabad-based Bharat Biotech has cut the size of Phase 2 clinical trials of its indigenous coronavirus vaccine Covaxin by half. The vaccine, which Bharat Biotech is developing in collaboration with the country's apex medical research body - Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR), will now be tested on 380 healthy volunteers in phase 2 as against 750 healthy volunteers decided earlier, Moneycontrol reported.

Russia on Wednesday announced that it has granted regulatory approval to another Covid-19 vaccine named EpiVacCorona. This comes after the country granted similar approval to Sputnik V, making it the first Covid-19 vaccine candidate in the world to attain regulatory approval. EpiVacCorona was developed by the Vector Institute in Siberia and completed its early-stage human trials last month. However, its results have not been published yet and a large-scale trial, known as Phase III, is yet to begin.

Covid reinfection: US man gets virus twice in 48 days, 2nd time more severe, given oxygen support

A 25-year-old man in Nevada, US was re-infected with coronavirus and the second infection was "more severe" than the first one, a study published in The Lancent on Monday said. Unlike the first time when he contracted Covid-19, the patient had to be hospitalised and put on oxygen support during re-infection as he developed breathing difficulty and low blood oxygen. the time at which the Nevada patient got re-infected, coincides with his parent (who had been living with him) testing positive for Covid-19 for the first time. Researchers are analysing the parent's samples to determine if they had any role in the re-infection.
