Oil prices plunge as new mutant coronavirus strain revives demand fears

Oil dropped towards $50 a barrel on Tuesday, adding to losses from the previous session, as a mutant variant of the coronavirus in Britain revived concerns over demand recovery. Detection of the new variant prompted several countries to close their borders to Britain. Both benchmarks slid nearly 3% on Monday, partly erasing recent gains driven by the rollout of COVID-19 vaccines, seen as key to allowing a return to normal life.

YES BANK on Tuesday said it has entered into collaboration with Salesforce, a leader in customer relationship management, to build a next generation technology platform to power the retail lending business, in line with the bank's strategy to further scale up its retails assets portfolio. COVID-19 mutant strain: RT-PCR testing, separate isolation for UK arrivals part of new SOP

The Indian government today issued a new standard operating procedure (SOP) for passengers arriving from the UK in the wake of the emergence of a new variant of the COVID-19 virus. The SOP mentions RT-PCR testing on arrival, separate isolation of those testing positive for the new variant of coronavirus, institutional quarantine for co-passengers of those testing positive.

Jobs in India projected to fall 2.5% to 395 mn in Q3: CMIE

India's employment is expected to fall by 2.5 per cent year-on-year (YoY) in October-December quarter of the current fiscal (FY21) as compared to the same period last year, according to a latest report by private think-tank Centre for Monitoring Indian Economy (CMIE). The third quarter of fiscal FY21 would end with employment of 395 million, which would be 2.5 per cent lower than 405 million employed in the December 2019 quarter, as per the CMIE data.  

Pollution deaths in India rose to 1.67 million in 2019 : Lancet

Toxic air killed more people in India in 2019 than in 2017, The Lancet said in a report shared by the government on Tuesday, with 1.67 million deaths accounting for 18% of all fatalities. India, whose cities top global pollution lists, faces a growing economic as well as human toll from bad air quality, which was linked to 1.24 million, or 12.5% of total deaths in the previous such study for 2017.

Indian TikTok clone gets Google, Microsoft backing in $100 million fund raise

The Indian parent of a TikTok copycat has raised more than $100 million from investors including Alphabet Inc's Google and Microsoft, months after the Chinese-owned short-video app was banned in the country. The app, Josh, is one of several home-grown short-video platforms that have sprung up since India blocked the wildly popular TikTok in June amidst a border crisis with China, attracting global investor interest in applications filling the gap.
