GDP figures were worse than predicted, says RBI Governor Shaktikanta Das

The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) Governor Shaktikanta Das said on Monday that India's gross domestic production (GDP) growth at 5 per cent came as a surprise and was much lower than anticipated. The RBI Governor said that bringing back the economy on growth trajectory should be the highest priority of the government. Last week, International Monetary Fund (IMF) had said that India's economic growth is "much weaker" than expected.

Maruti Suzuki rolls out discounts up to Rs 1 lakh ahead of festive season

The 45-day period between the onset of Onam and Diwali marks the festive season in India and typically accounts for 25-30 per cent of total sales for the auto sector. Although optimism is in short supply this year, players in the business are already rolling out attractive deals and discounts in an attempt to revive demand. Maruti Suzuki India (MSI), the country's largest car maker, which saw its market share dip by over 2 percentage points in the April to August period, is offering discounts upwards of Rs 40,000 on its vehicles.

RBI allows payment of all recurring bills through BBPS

In a consumer friendly initiative, the RBI on Monday expanded the scope of Bharat Bill Payment System (BBPS) to cover all repetitive bill payments, which may include school fees, insurance premiums and municipal taxes. Currently, the facility of payment of recurring bills through BBPS is available only in five segments -- direct to home (DTH), electricity, gas, telecom and water. BBPS is an integrated bill payment system which offers interoperable bill payment service to customers online as well as through a network of agents on the ground.

Govt asks Apple to expand manufacturing base in India; promises incentives

The government on Monday exhorted iPhone maker Apple to expand manufacturing base in India, and use the country as export hub, as it promised to line up fresh incentives and sops to galvanise electronics as well as phone industry in coming 2-3 months. Apple's manufacturing investment so far is only the "tip of the iceberg", IT Minister Ravi Shankar Prasad said, adding the government wants global giants like Apple & Samsung to have a "robust presence" here.

Google to venture into India's job search market with Kormo

Google is looking to make a foray into India's entry-level job search market with its Kormo app. The internet giant is reportedly planning to launch the app at its annual Google for India event in New Delhi on September 20. Kormo is a job and careers app that connects job seekers to businesses that are looking to hire and allows job seekers to create and maintain a digital CV.

Restore normal life to Kashmir, SC directs Centre

India's top court said on Monday the federal government should restore normal life in Kashmir as soon as possible, as a partial shutdown of the disputed region entered its 42nd day. India stripped its portion of Muslim-majority Kashmir of autonomy and statehood on Aug. 5, shutting off phone networks and imposing curfew-like restrictions in some areas to dampen discontent. Some of those curbs have been relaxed, but mobile communications in the Kashmir valley are largely still blocked.
