COVID-19 impact: Reliance to pay full salary of deceased employee for five years

In an attempt to help families of employees that have lost members to COVID-19, Mukesh Ambani-helmed Reliance Industries has announced that it will continue to pay the last-drawn salary of the deceased employee to his or her nominee for the next five years. The company said that it will also support the education of their children till they graduate from college.

Corporate tax collection fell below personal income tax collection for the first time in 12 years due to lower tax rates and the COVID-19 impact on businesses. The corporate income tax collection for FY21 stood at Rs 4.57 lakh crore, while total personal income tax was at Rs 4.69 lakh crore.

A string of 43 hikes this year as compared to just four cuts has seen prices of petrol and diesel break all records in India this year. Petrol prices have now broken the psychological Rs 100 per litre mark in as many as 135 districts in the country, including all the cities in states like Rajasthan, Maharashtra and Madhya Pradesh. In all, retail prices of petrol have gone up by Rs 10.78 per litre in this year so far, while diesel prices are up by Rs 11.51 per litre.

COVID-19 vaccination: SC directs Centre to undertake fresh review of policy

Observing that courts cannot remain "silent spectators" when constitutional rights of citizens are infringed by executive policies, the Supreme Court on Wednesday slammed the Centre's COVID vaccination policy, saying making it paid for the 18-44 age group while the jabs were offered free for those over 45 years is "prima facie arbitrary and irrational" and ordered its review.

Serum Institute of India whose, Covishield vaccine is currently being administered to citizens under India's vaccination programme, has sought indemnity against liabilities. This development comes a day after reports suggested that the Centre is leaning towards granting indemnity to foreign vaccine makers including Pfizer and Moderna.
