Salaries of central government employees to rise? Govt plans dearness allowance hike

The Central government is set to modify the index and base year that are used to calculate dearness allowance (DA). The move will result in yet another salary hike of the government employees after two per cent allowance raise approved earlier this year. The DA is a cost of living adjustment allowance paid to government employees and pensioners. It is a component of salary, and is counted as a fixed percentage of the person's basic salary.
According to a report in the Economic Times,  the Labour Ministry is working on a new series of consumer price index for industrial workers
 
Samsung unveils 'smart' fridge for Rs 2.8 lakh

 
Electronics major Samsung has unveiled a new refrigerator that features cameras, speakers, and a 21-inch touch display to provide a "smart" experience to users, albeit at a price tag of Rs 2.8 lakh.The smart refrigerator allows users to compile shopping lists, reading out schedules, and even watch video clips. Apart from the usual food storage, users can control and monitor their other connected appliances like washing machines and smartphones from the Family Hub screen. An interesting feature is the built-in view inside camera that allows users to digitally label their food with expiration dates, or use a mobile device to peek inside their fridge from a remote location.
 
Merger of associate banks with SBI to enhance profitability: Minister
 
The government has said the merger of five associate banks with the SBI would help in enhancing profitability and loan giving capability of the country's largest lender. While replying to debate on a bill related to the merger process, Minister of State for Finance Shiv Pratap Shukla told the Rajya Sabha that not a single employee has been retrenched after the merger. Five associates and Bharatiya Mahila Bank were merged with the SBI on April 1, 2017. The five associates were State Bank of Bikaner and Jaipur (SBBJ), State Bank of Hyderabad (SBH), State Bank of Mysore (SBM), State Bank of Patiala (SBP) and State Bank of Travancore (SBT).
 
 
Google to appeal against $5 bn fine by EU in Android antitrust case  
 
Tech giant Google has said it will appeal against the European Commission's antitrust fine of 4.34 billion euros (USD 5 billion), contending that its Android operating system (OS) has "created more choice for everyone, not less". Google's India-born CEO Sundar Pichai, in a blogpost, defended the popular mobile OS saying it was because of Android that there are now more than 24,000 devices available across price points from over 1,300 different brands, including many European phone makers. The European Union has slapped Google with a whopping 4.34-billion-euro fine for abusing the dominance of its Android OS in the biggest antitrust penalty in the bloc's history. The decision, which follows a three-year investigation, said the US tech giant had illegally used Android's near-monopoly to boost usage of its own search engine and browser.
 
IT Min may speak to WhatsApp again over steps to curb rumours
 
The IT Ministry is of the view that WhatsApp has not addressed all concerns raised by the government on curbing fake messages that incite mob lynching incidents, and may reach out to the messaging platform again in a few days. WhatsApp has been under fire from the Indian government over fake news and false information being circulated on its messaging platform. Such messages have incited mob-fury, triggering multiple cases of lynching across parts of India and the government has issued a stern warning to the company to clamp down on hoax messages designed to "provoke" and "instigate" people.
