Mumbai's civic body, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) withdrew its order for body bags for deceased COVID-19 patients after it was pointed out that the body bags were being bought at double the original price. This comes at a time when Mumbai alone has reported nearly 2,000 coronavirus-related deaths to date. The health minister has ordered an investigation into the matter after a social activist Anjali Damania raised an objection. Malls and restaurants opened for the public on Monday in several parts of the country, with strict protocols. The establishments had been issued a stringent set of Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) by the Centre, which included measures like allowing only asymptomatic staff, guests, customers on the premises, staggered entry of the visitors, adequate manpower to ensure social distancing norms and hand sanitiser and thermal screening at the entrance. India recorded a spike of over 9,000 in the number of new novel coronavirus infections reported across the country. The number of confirmed COVID-19 cases in Maharashtra, the Indian state with the most cases, crossed that of China on Sunday with a tally of 85,975. Maharashtra's Health Department reported 3,007 new cases on June 7. However, the shopping malls and places of worship were opened on Monday, abiding by SOPs, as recommended by Ministry of Home Affairs' 'Unlock-1' notification.
