Rescue operations are still underway in Uttarakhand's Chamoli district where flash floods in the Alaknanda river system caused widespread destruction on Sunday. A total of 32 bodies have been recovered so far. The flash floods incurred heavy damage to the NTPC's 480 MW Tapovan-Vishnugad hydropower project and the 13.2 MW Rishiganga Hydel Project and swept away several homes. More than 600 personnel of The Indian Army, Indo-Tibetan Border Police (ITBP), National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) and State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) have been deployed in Chamoli district to carry out search and rescue operations. Two NTPC hydel power projects, Tapovan-Vishnugad and Rishi Ganga, were extensively damaged and scores of labourers trapped in tunnels as the waters came gushing in. Multiple agencies joined hands to rescue at least 30 workers trapped in a 250-metre tunnel at Tapovan, after the glacier burst in Uttarakhand's Chamoli district on Sunday. Rescue efforts are still on in the affected areas near Joshimath, with teams of the Army, Indo-Tibetan Border Police (ITBP), National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) and State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) coordinating to rescue people, who are feared to be trapped in a tunnel at the Tapovan-Vishnugad project. A total of 27 people have been rescued so far. Of these, 12 were saved from the smaller of the two tunnels at the Tapovan-Vishnugad project site and 15 from the Rishiganga site.
