To avoid disconnection of PAN or face problem in filing income tax, you should link Aadhaar with PAN before March 31, 2019.

Supreme Court has made it mandatory that Income Tax returns will be filed with Aadhaar and the last date for linking PAN with Aadhaar is March 31.

The UIDAI says the SC judgement on Aadhaar does not bar voluntary use of such payment or receipt mechanism.

On the last date of hearing, the UIDAI had told the court that it was technically not possible to match the fingerprints of an unidentified body with the biometrics of 120 crore people stored in its database.

Back in July, the CBDT extended the deadline for the PAN-Aadhaar linking to March 31, 2019, so presumably this deadline stands till further notifications from the government.

Finance Minister Arun Jaitley, while hailing the Aadhaar verdict, said that his government would assess whether the Supreme Court has banned private companies from using Aadhaar data based on procedural concerns.

The government in 2017 has introduced the aforesaid section in the income tax act making it mandatory for assesses to quote Aadhaar/Enrolment ID of Aadhaar application form for filing of return of income.

The five-judge constitution bench of Supreme Court, led by Chief Justice Dipak Misra, struck down Section 57 of the Aadhaar Act which allowed not only the government but also any private entity to demand Aadhaar.
