At closing too, benchmark indices logged record high levels. While Sensex closed 553 points higher at 40,267 level, Nifty rose 165 points to 12,088 level.

Except IT sector, all the other indices ended in the red in today's trade. Biggest fall in today's trade was seen in PSU Bank, which was down 2.8%, followed by Auto, Media, Infra, Energy and Metal, each declining over 1%. Only gaining sector of the day was IT, up 0.66%.

However, the market rally could fizzle out soon and investors would be seen running for cover to minimize losses in the next few trading sessions, since Sensex and Nifty are trading at uncomfortably high price to earnings ratio.

Share price of YES Bank fell almost 6 per cent to a new 52-week low at Rs 146.85 on Wednesday, after the private bank informed the exchanges about appointment of an additional Director on its Board by Reserve Bank of India (RBI).

After surging over 200 points in early session, the 30-share index was trading 98.07 points, or 0.26 per cent, higher at 37,416.60. The broader NSE Nifty was also trading 21.65 points, or 0.19 per cent, up at 11,243.70.

The rupee appreciated by 23 paise to 70.21 against the US dollar in opening trade on Wednesday.
