The 30-share Sensex resumed higher and advanced to 34,177, but soon slipped on profit-taking to touch a low of 33,924. It finally closed 160.69 points, or 0.47 per cent, higher at 34,101. The index marked its highest closing since February 28 today, when it had closed at 34,184.

The Sensex and Nifty closed lower on the last trading day of the current fiscal amid expiry of March derivatives contracts. While the Sensex closed 205 points or 0.62% lower at 32,968 level, the Nifty fell 70 points to 10,113 points. On the Sensex, Tata Steel (3.25%),  Bharti Airtel (3.05%) and Adani Ports (2.93%) were top losers. Wipro (3.27%), Coal India (2.94%) and Hero MotoCorp (2.30%) were the top gainers. PNB was the top loser on BSE Bankex falling 3.83%. ICICI Bank (1.94%), Federal Bank (1.81%) and SBI (1.48%) were the other losers on the index. All BSE sectoral indexes except consumer durables and oil and gas indexes closed in the red , signalling weakness in the market.

The Sensex and Nifty closed lower on Thursday after the US Federal Reserve raised rates by 25 basis points to 1.75 per cent, signalling two more hikes for 2018, which led to outflow of funds from emerging markets to the US. Trade war fears also intensified on reports that US president Donald Trump plans to announce about $50 billion of tariffs against China over intellectual-property violations.  At home, traders were cautious ahead of the monthly derivatives expiry. While the Sensex fell 130 points to 33,006, Nifty closed 40 points lower at 10,114 level. BSE small cap and midcap indices fell 180 points (1.05%) and 121 points (0.75%) to 17,064 and 15,910 levels, respectively. Auto and capital goods stocks were the major losers on BSE with the indices falling 0.94% and 1.07%, respectively. Top losers on the Sensex were SBI (2.46%), Wipro (2.32%) and M&M (2.14%).
