Even as rail and road services across north and east India were crippled mid-afternoon on Tuesday due to a massive power outage, flight operations at Delhi's IGI airport remained unaffected.

Power supply was disrupted in ten states, including Delhi, Uttar Pradesh, Haryana, West Bengal, Assam and Punjab, after the Northern and Eastern Grids tripped, affecting millions of people.Delhi airport ops not affected

The Northern Grid had collapsed on Monday too, leading to power outages across seven states, including the national capital, and power could be restored only by afternoon.

Ficci Secretary General Rajiv Kumar said the demand-supply gap would not be bridged until the government encourages investments in power generation and transmission.

A majority of the power distribution firms in India - owned mostly by state governments - are unable to recover costs and are saddled with mounting losses. The Centre has put its best foot forward to rescue the distribution companies, but it needs the support of the states.

Delhi metro services were also disrupted due to tripping of the power supply across northern India, however, services were resumed on all six lines by 8.45 am after almost three hours.

Apart from Delhi, about six states have been hit due to the northern grid failure including Punjab, Haryana, Himachal Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh, Rajasthan andJammu Kashmir.
