The Sensex and Nifty scaled fresh peaks in trade today on gains in large cap stocks such as L&T, Tata Motors, ONGC and Reliance Industries. In global markets too, stocks rose after investors welcomed signs of progress in resolving the trade dispute between US and China.While the Sensex touched an all-time high of 38,340 breaching the previous peak of 38,076 reached on August 9, Nifty crossed the 11,500 mark for the first time ever to hit a new high of 11,565 level.  Nifty's previous record high stood at 11,495 points reached on August 9.Later, the indices closed at fresh record highs. While the Sensex closed 330 points or 0.87% higher to 38,278 level, the Nifty ended the day at fresh high of 11,551 level, rising 0.715 or 81 points.Top Sensex gainers were L&T (6.74%), Tata Motors (4.74%), ONGC (3.34%), Vedanta (3.16%) and Tata Steel (3.24%).Infosys (3.22%) was the top Sensex loser after the firm announced last week its CFO MD Ranganath had resigned from the company.Other losers were Maruti (0.79%) and ICICI Bank (0.50%).Besides, fresh inflows by foreign funds and persistent buying by domestic institutional investors (DIIs) and rupee recovery also boosted investor sentiment, brokers said.Market breadth was positive with 1475 stocks rising compared to 1267 falling on the BSE. The midcap index led the rise in market with 1.05 percent or 170 points rally to 16,476 level.Among 19 sectoral indices, BSE auto (1%), Capital goods  (3.74%), metal (3.32%) and oil and gas indices (1.30 percent) were the top gainers in trade today.

The notice issued on Aug. 16, said that, \"every insurer shall make provision for medical insurance for treatment of mental illness on the same basis as is available for treatment of physical illness.\" The order is applicable on all insurance companies in India with immediate effect. The Mental Healthcare Act, 2017, which came into effect on May 29, is aimed at protecting the rights of persons with mental illnesses during delivery of mental healthcare and services.UPI gets an upgrade with new featuresNational Payments Corporation of India (NPCI) has launched UPI 2.0 in Mumbai as an upgrade to the first iteration of Unified Payments Interface (UPI) that debuted in April 2016. The new UPI version has features such as UPI Mandate and Invoice in the Inbox. There are also new security enhancements including Signed Intent and QR that are designed to let customers verify merchants before making any payments as reported by NDTV. Further, there is an option to attach UPI to an overdraft (OD) account. This comes in addition to the existing saving and current account support. Banks that are using the upgrade include State Bank of India (SBI), HDFC Bank, Axis Bank, ICICI Bank, IDBI Bank, RBL Bank, Yes Bank, Kotak Mahindra Bank, IndusInd Bank, Federal Bank, and HSBC.Mercedes-Benz to hike prices by up to 4% next monthGerman luxury carmaker Mercedes-Benz said it will hike prices of its vehicles across models by up to 4 per cent from September to offset adverse impacts of rising input costs and upward forex movement. The Sensex recovered by 207 points to 37,852, taking comfort from positive inflation numbers coupled with emergence of buying by domestic institutional investors.The Nifty too rose 80 points to close at 11,435. Besides strengthening rupee, encouraging earnings by some blue-chip firms including Tata Steel and Sun Pharma also helped in building positive sentiments, brokers said.The Sensex had lost 379.47 points in the previous two sessions.Sun Pharma (6.91%), YES Bank (2.87%) and ICICI Bank (2.17%) were the top Sensex gainers. The Sun Pharma stock rose after the firm reported a consolidated net profit of Rs 982.51 crore for the quarter ended June 30, 2018 compared with net loss of Rs 424.92 crore for the corresponding period of 2017-18.Tata Steel stock also gained in the Sensex list, surging 1.70 per cent after the company said its consolidated net profit jumped more than two-folds to Rs 1,933 crore in the April-June quarter of 2018-19 compared to Rs 921 crore during the same period a year ago.Meanwhile, the rupee closed at 69.90 level against the dollar compared with Monday's close of 69.93.Intra day, the currency fell past the key 70 level to hit a fresh all time low of 70.08. Market breadth was marginally negative with 1302 stocks closing higher compared with 1390 ending in the red on BSE.

The Sensex rose 137 points to close above the 38,000-mark for the first time, while the broader Nifty too ended at a fresh lifetime high on unabated buying by participants.While, the Sensex closed at 38,024.37, breaking its previous record close of 37,887 reached yesterday, Nifty rose 20 points to close at 11,470-- surpassing its previous high of 11,450 level.ICICI Bank was the top Sensex gainer, surging 4.64 per cent, followed by Axis Bank at 3.86 per cent and SBI 2.53 per cent.The index has taken 11 sessions to scale the 38,000 mark from 37,000 level reached on July 26.Banking stocks led the rally with the BSE bankex rising 415 points or 1.32% to 32,003 level. Bank Nifty too rose 0.92% to 28,320 level. Bharti Airtel (4.64%), ONGC (1.75%) and Kotak Mahindra Bank (0.98%) were the top Sensex losers. On a net basis, foreign portfolio investors (FPIs) bought shares worth Rs 568.63 crore, while domestic institutional investors (DIIs) bought equities to the tune of Rs 30.25 crore yesterday, provisional data showed.

While the Sensex has gained 11.67% since the beginning of this year, Nifty rose 9% during the same period this year.

The market closed at record highs today powered by a surge in banking and consumer durables stocks. While the Sensex closed 221 points or 0.59% higher at 37,887, the Nifty gained 60 points to close at 11,450 level. Intra day, the Sensex hit an all-time high of 37,931 and Nifty touched 11,459 level for the first time. Market heavyweight Reliance Industries added 2.85% or 35 points to close at 1217 level. The stock touched a fresh 52 week high of 1222 in trade today. Other Sensex gainers were ONGC (2.87%), ICICI Bank (1.63%) and SBI (1.53%).  Banking stocks led the charge with the Bank Nifty closing above 28,000 level for first time. BSE bankex too rose 245 points or 0.78% to close at 31587 level. Consumer goods stocks too contributed to the rally with a 271 points or 1.25% rise in trade today. Maruti Suzuki was the top Sensex loser falling 1.99%. However, market breadth was negative with 1,315 stocks closing higher compared with 1,422 stocks falling on the BSE.
