The much anticipated government intervention meant to help sugar mills clear cane price arrears to the tune of Rs 22,000 crore has finally come.

The government has also increased minimum selling price (ex-mill sale price) to Rs 29 per kg from Rs 25 per kg. The centre would create a buffer stock of 3 million tonnes of the excess sugar, and has allotted Rs 1,200 crore for this purpose.

The Food Ministry has proposed creation of a buffer stock of 3 million tonnes of sugar. The carrying cost of the sweetener would be borne by the government, which is estimated to cost the exchequer around Rs 1,300 crore.
