In India, the genome sequencing of less than one per cent of COVID samples is being conducted. The government has admitted that it is now not feasible to conduct the sequencing of five per cent of the country's COVID samples, as promised earlier. Genome sequencing is essential to understand how the virus is mutating and the need for change in treatment protocol accordingly, said epidemiologist Prof Eric Ding. But are we sequencing enough? Serum Institute of India CEO Adar Poonawalla on Tuesday said that the effectiveness of the Covishield vaccine rises to as much as 90 per cent if the two shots are separated by about 2.5-3 months. Speaking to India Today, Poonawalla added that no COVID-19 vaccine is preventing more than 20-30 per cent of recipients from getting the disease. He said that the vaccine acts as a shield, which prevents anyone from going to the hospital and the same applies to different virus mutations. He also said that immunity kicks in one month after taking the first dose of the Covishield vaccine. Watch the video for more.Watch More | Is Covishield safe for people with low immunity? Analysis so far by the Consortium on Genomics (INSACOG), a grouping of 10 National Laboratories under the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, revealed 771 variants of concerns (VOCs) have been detected in a total of 10,787 positive samples

The INSACOG, a network of 10 Indian labs, dedicated to conducting genomic sequencing and analysis of circulating COVID-19 viruses, has detected a double mutant variant of SARS-CoV-2, the virus that causes coronavirus. The mutant virus has been detected in 15-20 per cent samples collected from Maharashtra. The Union Health Ministry is however doubtful, if these variants have been behind the recent spike in COVID-19 cases across the nation.
