Even at the mandis, tomatoes are being sold at a steeper price.

On visiting the farms of Malla Ramgarh, Nathuakhan, Odakhan and Hartola, the reporter found that the farmers are getting merely Rs 12 to Rs 18 per kg for the tomatoes, for which the Delhiites had recently paid over Rs 100 per kg.

The Congress' protest comes after tomato prices have skyrocketed due to short supply after heavy rainfall. Price of tomatoes in Delhi has crossed Rs 100 per kg, while in Mumbai it is Rs 80, Rs 57 in Chennai and Rs 95 in Kolkata.

While Mother Dairy is selling the kitchen staple at Rs 92 per kg through its 300 retail stores in Delhi-NCR, online grocery platforms like Big Basket and Grofers are offering it at nearly Rs 100 per kg here.

Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, Madhya Pradesh, West Bengal and Odisha are the major tomato growing states.  However, supply from states like Karnataka, Maharashtra and Gujarat has almost dried up, resulting hike in prices.

The central government said the price rise in tomato is a \"seasonal phenomena\" and it is keeping a close watch on the price movement.
