Rescue operations are still underway in Uttarakhand's Chamoli district where flash floods in the Alaknanda river system caused widespread destruction on Sunday. A total of 32 bodies have been recovered so far. The flash floods incurred heavy damage to the NTPC's 480 MW Tapovan-Vishnugad hydropower project and the 13.2 MW Rishiganga Hydel Project and swept away several homes. More than 600 personnel of The Indian Army, Indo-Tibetan Border Police (ITBP), National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) and State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) have been deployed in Chamoli district to carry out search and rescue operations. Three days have passed since flash floods hit parts of Uttarakhand's Chamoli district damaging NTPC Hydro Power Project on the river Dhauli Ganga. Satellite images have revealed the extent of the damage caused to the 480 MW Tapovan-Vishnugad hydropower plant and the 13.2 MW under-construction Rishiganga Hydel Project. The images suggest that almost the whole of the hydropower project has been clogged by silt caused by the powerful downstream landslide. Multiple agencies joined hands to rescue at least 30 workers trapped in a 250-metre tunnel at Tapovan, after the glacier burst in Uttarakhand's Chamoli district on Sunday. Rescue efforts are still on in the affected areas near Joshimath, with teams of the Army, Indo-Tibetan Border Police (ITBP), National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) and State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) coordinating to rescue people, who are feared to be trapped in a tunnel at the Tapovan-Vishnugad project. A total of 27 people have been rescued so far. Of these, 12 were saved from the smaller of the two tunnels at the Tapovan-Vishnugad project site and 15 from the Rishiganga site. An overnight operation to clear the debris and slush in the Tapovan tunnel, which has trapped many following the Uttarakhand glacier burst, has managed to clear the entrance to the tunnel. An approximate of 120 metres of the tunnel entry has been cleared, reducing the height of the slush to some extent. A total of 26 bodies have been recovered, with several people still missing as multiple agencies continue rescue and relief operations in different parts of the Chamoli district. Two power projects, NTPC's Tapovan-Vishnugad hydel project and the Rishi Ganga Hydel Project were extensively damaged yesterday due to glacier break in Uttarakhand with scores of labourers trapped in tunnels as the water came rushing in. Later in the day, 16 men were rescued safely by ITBP personnel from a tunnel near the Tapovan dam.The National Crisis Management Committee (NCMC) said there was no danger of floods in downstream areas as the water level had been contained. CM Rawat announced Rs 4 lakh compensation for the families of those killed in the tragedy. The Rishi Ganga project was started in 2011 but was damaged for the first time in 2016.
