Billionaire Mukesh Ambani-led Relaince Jio has shaken up the telecom market with its free voice calls and dirtcheap prices for 4G data, forcing established players including Bharti Airtel, Vodafone and Idea Cellular to match the cut-throat prices to protect their market share.

Tata Teleservices and Reliance Communications' share saw a hike of at least 10 per cent on Monday amidst news of the merger talks between the two.

Reliance Jio customers will get free voice calling (including STD) and roaming services, bundled with data access for Rs 19 onwards, making the offering one of the \"lowest\" globally.

\"Trai has written to all telecom operators reminding them about call drop regulations with expectations that they have put all mechanisms in place to comply with them,\" an official source said.

The agency added it expects the 2016 credit profiles of the top-four Indian telcos to come under pressure amid tougher competition, larger capex requirements and debt funded M&A.

The telecom regulator has mandated operators to compensate consumers from January 1 if they continue to face the call drop problem.

The move comes amid the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (Trai) examining whether there are any tariff plans by the service providers wherein call drops actually incentivise or benefit the companies.

\"Voice realisation is 30-33 paise per minute whereas our rack rates are almost about 90 paise, there is huge headroom to reduce discounts,\" Bharti Airtel (India & SA) MD & CEO Gopal Vittal said.

Telecom services provider Vodafone has increased pre-paid data tariff for 2G and 3G services in Delhi-NCR by up to 47 per cent, while MTS hiked rates of post-paid data pack by 8 per cent.

The company has withdrawn discounts that it was offering for online purchase of mobile data packs, bringing the prices at par with internet packs sold offline through retailers.

Idea has doubled the price for some 2G plans, while 3G will be costlier by about 33 per cent. The new rates came into effect from June 3.

Crisil said the debt to pre-tax profit ratio for the top three telcos - Bharti Airtel, Vodafone and Idea Cellular - would go up to 3.9 times from the 3.3 times before the auction.
