Although items like an immobiliser are becoming standard in most cars, a few simple precautions can make your vehicle safer. Here are a few tips from us for asafe drive.3.
1. Keep important packages in your trunk rather than the back seat. This will keep them out of sight and make them inaccessible to others.
2. Hide packages well. If you do not have a trunk such as in a hatchback or SUV, hide packages as best you can. Keep a blanket or even a tarpaulin cover in the car to throw over packages.
Even if you are just running into a shop for a quick purchase or into an ATM, take your cell phone, purse, iPad and any other electronics or valuables into the store with you.4.
Never leave the car running. It's hot out there and it can be tempting to leave the car running with the air-conditioning when you run into the local Mother Dairy store for milk. But even if you can lock your car doors while it's running, your car will be a beacon for a car thief in the parking lot.Don't leave an open invitation in the form of a running engine to avoid going.5
. Park in a busy area of the lot. Parking in the far end of the lot does make it easier to get in and out without fighting the traffic, but it also leaves your car vulnerable. With a lot of people coming and going near your car, a thief is less likely to chance getting caught breaking in.6.
Park in a well- lit area after dark. When you are shopping after dark, be sure to park as close to the parking lot lights as you can. Shadows provide those looking to break in to a car an easy place to do their work. Look for well- lit areas in malls and other basement car parkings.7.
Use unmarked reusable shopping bags. Not only are reusable bags good for the environment, but if you use unmarked bags people walking by won't be able to guess what's in them. A bag from an electronics store will attract a potential thief. An unmarked bag is less likely to draw attention.8
. Don't leave gifts in your car overnight. The car might be a good hiding place that prevents you from having to carry the packages past interested eyes, but it's not a safe place to leave them.9
. Aim for one- stop shopping. The more stores you stop at the more you will have to leave in your car as you go from place to place.10.
When you give your vehicle for servicing, make sure to take out all valuable items which may be lying inside or in the glove box. We often forget things like sunglasses and ipods in our cars, so be sure to empty your vehicle of these things.
In case of your car being stolen, lodge a First Information report ( FIR) immediately with the nearest police station in the area where the car was stolen.
Remember that to submit an insurance claim, this is a necessary step.
