In an effort to rev up the somnolent executive sedan segment, South Korean carmaker Hyundai has introduced the sixth generation of its Elantra sedan in the Indian market at a starting price of Rs 12.99 lakh. Elantra carries the freshness of the fifth generation to the next level. Unveiled at the 2015 Frankfurt Motor Show, the 2016 MY Elantra boasts an all-new interior and exterior design. Indeed, with bolder exteriors, the car projects a sporty look. The interiors have an electric sunroof, front ventilated seat, engine start/stop push button, rear AC vents, and sporty aluminium pedals.
The executive sedan segment in India has seen a virtual slump with only Toyota Corolla Altis selling in triple digits. Most of the models - Chevrolet Cruze, Skoda Octavia, Renault Fluence and Volkswagen Jetta - have lost sheen, shrinking the sales of the segment to a mere 1000 units a month.
"We are refreshing the entire segment with the new Elantra. In the pursuit to achieve world's best technology, the All New Elantra is the culmination of 26 years of continuous and dedicated research by Hyundai Motor. It's our global best seller with 11.5 million units sold worldwide, and going by its success in the US and other developed market we are expecting some strong traction. The model comes at a special invitation price till December 2016," said Hyundai MD and CEO Y.K. Koo at the launch.
The car has been launched in both petrol and diesel. It has a new Nu 2.0L petrol engine -- making it the biggest petrol engine in its class -- and delivers 14.59 kmpl. The proven 1.6L U2 Common Rail Technology diesel engine, also part of other models like the Creta and Verna, delivers 22.54 kmpl.
The company has kept the standard safety package with 6 airbags, anti-lock brake system and electronic stability control along with impact sensing door unlock mechanism.
