They are eyeing the growing wine market with interest. Big names from the world of wine are entering India not just to bring their international classics to the land of Som Ras but also to produce Indian wines. The latest to venture into India are two old players—Diageo and the Pernod Ricard Group (Seagram India) who have both launched a bouquet of wines.

Seagram has come to the stage with a bang. Its first Indian wine, Nine Hills, was launched earlier this year. The wine gets its name from the nine hills surrounding Nashik where the company’s winery and the vineyards are located. The wine is made under the supervision of French Master Winemaker Jean-Manuel Jacquinot.

Diageo, one of the older players in the wine market, has actually been in India for over 15 years. Senior executives at the company say there are tremendous opportunities in the Indian wine sector, thanks to changing lifestyles, global exposure and higher disposable incomes. “The market is growing at 35-40 per cent and we believe this pace of growth will continue over the next three-to-four years,” says an executive.

Diageo marked its entry into the Indian wine segment with the introduction of Nilaya, its first ever domestic wine. Nilaya, meaning “Blue Heaven”, is inspired by the mystic story of a woman on a glistening moonlit night. It has been crafted by master blenders from Diageo’s winery in Santa Vitoria in Italy.
