The chairperson and MD of Bharat Hotels is known for her strong ideas

Shalini S. Dagar     August 30, 2011
Though diminutive in size, Jyotsna Suri, 59, Chairperson and Managing Director, Bharat Hotels, is known for her strong ideas and forthright behaviour. She can threaten you with dire consequences if you incur her displeasure and then charm you with a smile, all within five minutes.

Taking over the reins of the business after husband Lalit Suri's death in 2006, she has forged an identity for the group that was missing earlier. The 'Lalit' brand is now secure.

Suri, who runs 18 hotels currently, wants to build a portfolio of 40 to 45 in the next five years. Of the new ones, around 20 to25 will be in the budget space under the brand 'Lalit Traveller' as Suri sees a clear opportunity in mid-segment hotels. She is grooming three of her four children to take over from her. Five years hence, she sees herself "way more relaxed" as the next generation takes over.
