Nokia claims Nexus 7 tablet infringes on its patents

BT Online Bureau     July 3, 2012
In another patent-infringement war, Nokia has reportedly issued a threat to the makers of the new Nexus 7 Android tablet , Google and Asus, saying the device infringes its patents. The Finnish telecom giant has asked the two companies to approach the handset maker for a patent license.

Announced last week, the Asus built Nexus 7 is Google's first own-brand tablet that runs on Android 4.1 Jelly Bean. The exact nature of why Nokia has alleged a patent infringment has not been reported.

Speculative reports said that the patent in question is related to 808.11 WiFi technology. The Nexus 7 is WiFi-only, with no cellular option, and much of Nokia's patent portfolio covers wireless systems.

It is unclear whether Nokia would chase the patent case like the Apple, as the former has no tablet of its own, so there's no direct competition to be damaged by Nexus 7 sales.
