Goa Institute of Management aims to make students industry-ready

How should management institutes manage the gap between finishing a course and becoming productive for an organisation? Most, if not all, management institutes, including the Goa Institute of Management (GIM), are attempting to address this important issue facing them today.

They are looking to bridge this gap by ensuring that the students are as industry ready as possible.

"Financial houses say that the students have theoretical knowledge but lack practical experience," says Professor Abhishek Ranga, part of GIM's core faculty. The institute will shortly have a trading floor, or finance lab, wherein the students will get a practical experience on its operations.

GIM, which will also make use of Thomson Reuters data for its students, will also get live data from the BSE to build on the training environment. As a compulsory part of their course curriculum , the first-year students are required to work under an NGO for the betterment of the community.

"This does not help in terms of placements, but gets them [the students] to be more aware of the social requirements and makes them better managers," adds Ranga.

To help its students with international exposure, GIM also regularly engages with three global institutes for exchange programmes. The institute also brings in international faculty -not merely as guest faculty - to come, stay on and teach an entire course to its students.
