PUBG Mobile loses to China's Honor of Kings in chart for top-grossing mobile games for March

Shubham Verma     April 9, 2021

PUBG Mobile seems to be losing its shine. According to a new report, China's blockbuster title Honor of Kings has emerged as the top-grossing mobile game worldwide for the month of March. But while PUBG Mobile has slipped one spot to end up being the second-highest grosser, the parent company Tencent Games saw no loss. That is because the owner of Honor of Kings is also Tencent Games. Honor of Kings raked in a revenue of $257.5 million, representing 63 per cent of total revenues from mobile games in March 2021.

The latest metrics come from Sensor Tower's Store Intelligence platform, and according to the report, PUBG Mobile brought in $240.5 million in revenue for March, securing the second spot in the chart. And this is a significant dip considering PUBG Mobile is available worldwide, as opposed to the small extent of the availability of Honor of Kings. The Tencent-owned Honor of Kings is popular in markets including China, Taiwan, and Thailand.

The Sensor Tower report says that 96.3 per cent of the total revenue that Honor of Kings swept in the month of March came from China, followed by 1.6 per cent from Thailand and 1.2 per cent from Taiwan. For PUBG Mobile, China contributed 59.7 per cent of the total revenue. The Battle Royale game is available as Game for Peach in China. The US followed this number by contributing 9.8 per cent. PUBG Mobile is banned in India but had it not been the case, India would also have been a major contributor to the revenue.

Last month, PUBG Mobile was the highest grosser with total revenue of $250 million. And while this was good news for PUBG Mobile, the game celebrated its third anniversary with over 1 billion downloads, making it one of the fastest-growing mobile titles in the world.

The list for top-grossing mobile games for the month of March include Genshin Impact, which stands at the third spot, followed by Uma Musume Pretty Derby from Cygames and Coin Master from Moon Active. In fact, Uma Musume Pretty Derby has emerged as one of the biggest mobile games by player spending. The game generated total revenue of $136.6 million in March alone, giving an edge to the Japanese game in the sea of mobile titles owned by Chinese companies.

While Honor of Kings topped the overall revenue and App Store revenue charts, Coin Master emerged as the biggest grosser on Android's Google Play Store. Shockingly, PUBG Mobile is at the ninth spot in the chart for Google Play Store revenue makers. On the other hand, it has secured the second spot on both overall revenue and App Store revenue lists.
