Four youngsters from varying professions come together to float Giira Yachts, a one-stop shop for all sailing needs.
When did you set up Giira Yachts?
We started in August 2007 with a blog, www.giirayachts.com, which provided a wide range of information on yachts and sailing. The business started rolling in by January 2008, though the company was incorporated in September.
What services do you provide?
We provide consultancy to yacht buyers, facilitate the chartering of yachts, help with online and offline promotions and also organise boat shows and regattas. We have recently tied up with a sailing school, West Coast Marine Sailing School, and are handling its administration and marketing.
What is the price range for your various services?
The cost of chartering a yacht depends on the number of hours you want to hire it for as well as its size and type. The price ranges from Rs 10,000 to Rs 5 lakh a day. The consultation charges vary between Rs 2,500 and Rs 2.5 lakh, depending on the type of project.
How much was the initial investment required?
We pooled in about Rs 1 lakh from our savings to set up the Website.
How has the response been?
The demand for most services goes down during the monsoons, but for the rest of the year, we get two to five chartering orders in a month. We have also begun handling shows such as the Goa International Boat Show 2009.
What did you do before setting up Giira Yachts?
I was in advertising and design and worked with several corporate magazines. Gautam A. Bhatia was the co-founder of an IT company, WATConsult, and worked there for nearly five years. Meherzad K. Kajanwalla was the sales and marketing head of various teams selling gold, diamonds and equity, whereas Paurush F. Hyderabadwalla has handled several things, from real estate and restaurant to being a computer programmer.
Is Giira Yachts a full-time project for all of you?
We are completely devoted to our venture, but are also working as freelance consultants.
What about your future plans?
While we have the international certification for teaching sailing theoretically, we are in the process of receiving the nod for the actual sailing sessions.
