- MWC 2020 is scheduled to kick-off on February 24 and run till 27th of the month
- Through the event, there will be sessions held on emerging technologies such as 5G and IoT
- Artificial Intelligence is expected to be a topic of focus at the event
As we inch closer to this year's edition of the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona, the concerning shadow of the Coronavirus epidemic appears to be growing large over the consumer tech show. Ahead of the show officially kicking off on February 24, a number of high profile brands -- including LG, Amazon and Sony -- have canceled their participation to the event, thereby taking the focus away from what otherwise is expected to be a tech show which sets the trend for the world of tech in 2020.
From 5G to AI, MWC 2020 could be the platform where a number of key announcements regarding not only just smartphones and gadgets are made, but also upcoming technologies that are expected to drive the industry forward in 2020.
Ahead of the tech event kicking off, here's a look at the key issues that are going to be in focus at the event.
Year of 5G
One of the key technologies on focus at MWC 2020 is going to be 5G, which is expected to be a major attraction at the upcoming MWC 2020. While Samsung and Huawei have launched a few 5G smartphones last year, we expect to see the technology go mainstream this year. At MWC 2020, you can expect to see a bunch of new 5G phones like the Realme X50 Pro and Xiaomi Mi 10, and possibly some affordable 5G phones powered by the latest Snapdragon 765G SoC.
With 5G technology still being at a nascent stage, MWC 2020 could serve as the platform which showcases how 5G is going to arrive, what sort of 5G phones we can expect, what sort of 5G applications we can see in future. There will also be focus on how 5G will transform the world of digital services and networks, as well as its impact on businesses going forward. 5G is a transformative technology and MWC 2020 hope to give a glimpse of this futuristic transformation that 5G networks will bring.
Another key technology in focus at MWC 2020 is Artificial Intelligence (AI). Though it has been around for a while now, at this year's tech event in Barcelona, the biggest names in the industry are set to outline the path forward for the technology in the era of 5G.
There are going to be a number of sessions around this at the event, which would discuss the role of humans in a world that's slowly looking towards sophisticated algorithms for answers to our everyday questions. Many of these sessions are set to discuss issues such as the impact of automation on human workforces across the globe, and possibly look to provide us with answers on how to be AI-ready.
However, it remains to be seen how these discussions on AI will go now that one of the major sponsors of the tech event, Nvidia, has officially backed out from MWC 2020.
Internet of Things (IoT)
This year, the attendees at MWC 2020 will also celebrate the 10th edition of the Mobile IoT summit at the event. The summit will see top-tier mobile operators and leading global industry experts gather to discuss 5G-IoT use cases, Mobile IoT and other solutions such as Big Data,
Distributed Ledgers and Edge Computing. The experts gathered at the event will discuss how new technological developments are driving growth across a number of sectors and how operators are incorporating Mobile IoT into new 5G solutions. They will also discuss what the future of 5G will mean for IoT.
Security and Privacy
In the modern-day, discussions around security and privacy have taken center stage, and as such, one of MWC 2020's key topics is scheduled to be security and privacy.
The tech event will see a number of sessions around the same, where discussions will be held to analyse the growing responsibilities required to create the technology for tomorrow that's not only innovative but also responsible.
As the MWC website notes, "Recent scandals have eroded trust in the digital ecosystem. Coupled with the growing introduction and interest in legislation around privacy and the ethics of data usage as we enter the AI era, we are at a pivotal juncture in the evolution of the Internet."
From the consumer's point of view, arguably the most interesting piece of technology on show at MWC 2020 would be foldable displays. And at the tech show, a number of major players are expected to reveal their plans for the technology going forward.
As such, MWC 2020 is expected to see companies like Samsung, Huawei, and Nokia unveil new foldable phones, but also show how the technology has become ready for commercial operations.
