Coronavirus is a global emergency and the numbers of confirmed cases are increasing with every passing day. The pandemic has not only claimed over 3000 lives but also hampered a lot of businesses. Several major tech events got called out due to the outbreak and many on-ground launch events took place virtually. The latest conference to face the wrath of coronavirus was the SXSW conference. A few days ago, Twitter and Facebook announced that they will not be a part of the SXSW conference and now Apple too has joined the league.
Bloomberg on Thursday reported that Apple is reportedly pulling out of the conference due to the ongoing coronavirus outbreak. However, Apple is yet to issue an official statement about it. Following the suit, streaming app Netflix too reportedly backed out of SXSW. According to a Netflix representative, the company had cancelled five film screenings and a panel. It was earlier being reported that Netflix had plans to screen a feature film Uncorked and four other documentaries.
For the unversed, SXSW is amongst one of the major tech events in the world that brings together top tech brands, music and media in Austin.
A report in Verge revealed that not just the top tech giants like Apple, Facebook and Twitter, many other tech companies and organizations have announced that they will not attend the music, tech and film festivals, which was supposed to take place from March 13th to March 22nd in Austin, Texas. However, the organizers of SXSW have revealed that they are planning to go ahead with the event despite the withdrawals.
Safety is a top priority for SXSW. Currently, we are taking the following actions on-site: provision of disinfectant wipes and spray, hand sanitizer for common area spaces and activity spaces, microphone wipe downs, the inclusion of Austin Public Health Disease Prevention literature, outreach to all meeting spaces, venues, and hotels, SXSW updated on their website.
Earlier, biggest tech event Mobile World Congress 2020 which was supposed to take place in Barcelona, Spain from February 24 to February 27 was called off after several top companies backed out of the event.
When a few confirmed cases of coronavirus were found in India, Xiaomi and Realme as a precautionary measure had cancelled their on-ground events. On Thursday, Realme released a chain of their products such as Realme 6, Realme 6 Pro and the Realme Band in an online event. Xiaomi that had announced the arrival of Redmi Note 9 series will now host an online event on March 12.
