Struggling to source grocery items in the times of coronavirus? Worry no more as the food-delivery app Swiggy has now started delivering groceries and other essential items in tier 1 and tier 2 cities. The super-market apps like BigBasket and Grofers that were designed to deliver grocery items were unable to keep up with the demand and that led to a lot of delays in delivering essential items. However, Swiggy has now jumped to the rescue of its customers who were struggling to buy the important items.

As per a report published in Gadgets 360, the company will deliver in tier 1 and tier 2 cities and has also made its Swiggy Go and Swiggy Genie available for other cities as well. Earlier, Swiggy's pick-up and drop services were only available in Bangalore.

Swiggy has tied up with various offline retailers such as Vishal Mega Mart and Marico. They also promise to deliver the goods in just two hours.

Basis our initial pilots, we have enabled the delivery of groceries and essentials across all tier 1 & 2 cities leveraging our extensive hyperlocal delivery fleet. We are also in discussion with various national and regional (FMCG) brands to scale up this offering further. One recent example is our partnership with Marico to offer their essential products like Saffola Oils, Saffola Oats and Coco Soul Virgin coconut oil through the Saffola Store' on Swiggy, a Swiggy spokesperson told Gadgets 360.

Apart from the grocery delivery services, people can also make use of Swiggy's pick and drop services called the Swiggy Go and Swiggy Genie. This feature allows users to get any item picked and dropped to a nearby store.

Earlier this week, Swiggy's competitor in India, Zomato too had started grocery delivery in 80 Indian cities

"This has already been launched in India and the UAE, and will be live in other markets over the next few days," Zomato CEO Deepinder Goyal said in a statement. Zomato had also extended the Gold subscriptions as that would help the restaurateurs who are struggling to manage the finances and also provide one free year of Gold to the users.

"Restaurants face an unprecedented challenge amid the lockdown. Restaurateurs are fighting to pay their rentals, and afford even the most basic livelihood to the workers -- cooks, servers, housekeeping," Goyal had said in a tweet.

This move by the food-delivery apps will not only help the people who are unable to step out to get grocery items due to the 21-day lockdown but also help the delivery apps in retaining their customers. Despite restaurants being open for delivery, not many people were ordering food due to the fear of getting the virus.
