Airtel Rs 179 prepaid plan with Rs 2 lakh insurance: What is it and how does it work?
A few days ago Airtel launched a new prepaid plan: Rs 179 prepaid plan. At first glance, it looks like any other low-value, affordable, telecom plan that companies like Airtel, Vodafone and Jio come out with every week or two. There are some call benefits available with it, there are some data benefits, limited but more-than-enough SMS benefits with the Rs 179 plan. It's just that apart from the regular bells and whistles, the Rs 179 comes with a unique feature. The Rs 179 Airtel prepaid plan offers a life insurance cover of up to Rs 2 lakh to the plan subscriber.
Now, before we talk of the insurance, who is offering it, under what conditions, and how people -- in case some unfortunate incident happens -- will be able to claim the insurance, let's talk of the actual plan. You know, the primary purpose of the Rs 179 Airtel plan is going to give you telecom services. So first a look at these services.
The Rs 179 Airtel prepaid plan comes with a validity of 28 days. During this validity period, the Rs 179 Airtel plan offers 2GB data -- this is for the entire duration -- and unlimited calls to any network within India. It also gives users the ability to send 300 messages per day without any extra charge.
All in all, this seems like a decent plan but it is not for those who stream a lot of videos on their phones because the total 2GB data limit will not be enough for these users. But if you want a telecom connection and plan primarily for calling and regular use of apps like WhatsApp, the Rs 179 Airtel plan would be good enough.
The insurance is offered by Bharti Axa Life Insurance. This is different from the Rs 4 lakh life insurance coverage that the Rs 279 Airtel plan gives subscribers. That plan offers insurance cover from HDFC Life Insurance Company Limited.
The terms and conditions for both life insurance schemes are the same. And they go something like this (for all terms and conditions and clarifications please ask Airtel).
-- The life insurance of Rs 2 lakh will be available to active subscribers of Rs 179 Airtel prepaid plan. This means a user is covered under the insurance scheme only if at the time of his or her death the plan was active. A user will not get the insurance coverage if the Rs 179 recharge was done only once or twice and then was not renewed.
-- The insurance cover is available for users who are aged 18-54 years. Airtel staff will need proof of age before activating the insurance. Also, the insurance will lapse as soon as the user turns 55.
-- Airtel says that as part of the insurance policy, a user will have to provide details of his or her nominee who will get the money in case of the user's death. These details will have to be provided at an Airtel kiosk or through the app and customer support. "You may manage nominee, address and other details either directly through Your Airtel Thanks App or through any authorized Airtel Retailer," says the company.
-- Airtel says that even if a user has two SIM cards, both loaded with Rs 179 prepaid plan, the maximum insurance coverage is Rs 2 lakh.
-- In case the life insurance is claimed, Airtel notes that it would require the death certificate as well as other supporting documents, depending on the nature of death. If It was accident, documents from cops would be required. In case of natural death, doctors would have to provide supporting documents for use in the insurance claim.
