All service providers lost subscribers in 2019 except Reliance Jio and BSNL, says TRAI

TRAI on Wednesday released its Yearly Telecom Services Performance Indicator Report for the Year, 2019, in which it noted that all service providers have registered a decline in subscriber base except Reliance Jio and BSNL during 2019.

The Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) on Wednesday noted that all service providers have registered a decline in subscriber base except Reliance Jio and BSNL during 2019. TRAI carried the development in the Yearly Telecom Services Performance Indicator Report for the Year, 2019 that it released on Wednesday.

"Reliance Jio Infocomm Ltd has added the maximum number of telephone subscribers (90.95 million net addition) during the year 2019. All service providers have registered a decline in their subscriber base except M/s Reliance Jio Infocomm and BSNL during the year 2019," TRAI said.

The regulator said that Vodafone Idea or Vi recorded the highest proportion of rural subscribers, that is 51.78 per cent followed by Bharti Airtel that recorded 43.87 per cent of their total number of telephone subscribers at the end of December 2019.

The report further noted that government-owned telco Bhartiya Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL) was the leading operator in wireline service with 9.58 million subscribers at the end of December, 19 followed by Airtel with 4.31 million subscribers.

TRAI recorded that Reliance Jio holds the top position of internet service provider with 51.60 per cent market share of total internet subscribers followed by Airtel with 23.24 per cent. Jio also tops the list of broadband (wired+wireless) service providers in terms of subscribers as of 31st December 2019 with 370.87 million followed by Airtel and Vodafone Idea that have 140.40 million and 118.45 million subscribers respectively.

Reliance Jio also started providing its services in the wireline sector and added 1.05 million subscribers from December 2018 to December 2019. The regulator stated that all other service providers showed a decline in their wireline subscriber base during the year.

TRAI noted that PSUs BSNL and MTNL market share decreased 60.47 per cent at the end of December 2019 as against 67.24 per cent at the end of December 2018. Both BSNL and MTNL showed a decline in their wireline subscriber base during the year 2019.

TRAI in a separate report had stated that as of August 2020, Airtel added more subscribers than Reliance Jio. Airtel counted 28.99 lakh subscribers, whereas, Reliance Jio stayed behind with 18.64 lakhs subscriber additions in August. This was followed by government-owned telecom BSNL with 2 lakh subscribers.
