Amazon, Sony to skip Mobile World Congress 2020 due to coronavirus outbreak

After LG, ZTE and Ericsson, Amazon and Sony are the latest companies to pull out of Mobile World Congress 2020 due to the Coronavirus outbreak.

After LG, ZTE and Ericsson, Amazon and Sony are the latest companies to pull out of Mobile World Congress 2020 due to the Coronavirus outbreak. The event, which is the biggest mobile technology trade show is being held in Spain, Barcelona.

An Amazon spokesperson told Techcrunch that the company will not participate in the exhibition.Due to the outbreak and continued concerns about novel coronavirus, Amazon will withdraw from exhibiting and participating in Mobile World Congress 2020, scheduled for Feb. 24-27 in Barcelona, Spain, the statement.

Meanwhile, Sony too posted about its withdrawal on its website. They wrote, Sony has been closely monitoring the evolving situation following the novel coronavirus outbreak, which was declared a global emergency by the World Health Organization on January 30th, 2020. As we place the utmost importance on the safety and wellbeing of our customers, partners, media and employees, we have taken the difficult decision to withdraw from exhibiting and participating at MWC 2020 in Barcelona, Spain.

Although Amazon had nothing major product to showcase at the event, Sony had often launched its flagship products at MWC. Sony revealed that it will make announcements about their products through its Xperia YouTube channel.

Earlier, the organizers of MWC had issued a statement stating the countermeasures they had taking against the spread of the coronavirus. The report read that no visitor from the Hubei province will be allowed attending the event. Travellers from China will have to produce proof stating they have been out of China for at least 14 days before the event. Everyone coming to event will have to clarify that they have not been in contact with anyone infected.

As precautionary measures, the organizers have increased cleaning around all high profiled areas such as catering areas, surfaces, handrails etc and carry out disinfection programme across all high-volume touchpoints.

Till now over 908 people have succumbed to the deadly disease and over 40,171 people were found infected. The disease originated from Wuhan and Hubei province and majority of affected people are from China.

Meanwhile, the Indian citizens living in Wuhan were brought back to the country and were kept at quarantine centres in Manesar.
