Apple has introduced offer codes that can be used by developers to offer discounted or free subscriptions to users. The offer codes can either be printed and handed out at an event or they can be given digitally through e mails or apps. These are one-time codes and will help developers acquire, retain and win back customers, according to Apple. There are three one-time codes from which the developer can choose from for the duration which suits them, as per a report by TechCrunch.
The first one is the free offer code and does not charge money from users as the subscription is free for a specific trial period. The second offer is the pay-as-you-go offer and gives a discount to subscribers during each billing period for a specific duration.
The third one-time subscription offer is the pay-up-front offer code. This will require the subscribers to pay for a certain duration at a discounted price. For example, if a user has to pay a discounted amount for a subscription of an app for six months after which the developer may introduce the standard pricing of the app.
The offer codes can be redeemed once and last up to six months after their creation. Customers can renew one code per offer but they may be eligible to redeem multiple offers for a single subscription, depending on what the developer has to offer.
As per the report, customers can redeem the codes on iOS 14 and iPadOS 14 and later by way of a one-time code-redemption URL, or within the developer's app if they have implemented the API designed for use with the feature. Apple then follows up with the process including displaying the offer details screen, with app icon, subscription display name, duration and pricing.
Through the offer codes, developers can attract many first-time subscribers as they will have to pay only a discounted amount to avail the same benefits. Subscribers can experience the benefits of paid subscriptions in the trial period.
The new offer codes will join Apple's other two existing subscription offers available, introductory and promotional. Apple noted that developers can provide any combination, or all three types of offers at once, depending on their business goals.
The offer codes come in the backdrop of long-going feuds of Apple with developers over the 30 per cent commission Apple takes for listing apps on the App Store.
